Brazil, Uruguay approve construction of jointly owned wind farms..

Brazil and Uruguay have authorized the construction of two jointly operated wind farms that will add 100MW of installed capacity to their respective power grids.
Located in Uruguayan territory close to the Brazilian border, the facilities are expected to begin operating by mid-2013, Uruguay's government said in a note.
The projects form part of the Grupo de Alto Nivel (GAN) power-sharing deal struck earlier this year between state-run utilities Eletrobras (NYSE: EBR) and UTE.
The agreement also includes a commitment from Brazil to raise energy supply to its neighbor from 300MW to 500MW, representing a third of Uruguay's power needs.
Eletrobras is still awaiting an environmental permit to begin construction of a transmission line linking the countries' power grids.
The projects have already secured funding from Brazil's national development bank BNDES.
Meanwhile Argentina is reportedly conducting "technical and economic viability studies" for the construction of a large-scale hydroelectric plant to be jointly operated by Brazil.
The project will be developed "in the mould" of the 14GW Itaipu facility on Brazil's border with Paraguay, according to local media reports.
