December 10 – December 17
The European Union will collect the Nobel peace prize; securities industry professionals attend a conference in New York; talks on the future of Georgian breakaway regions resume; and nuclear safety experts gather in Japan

French policy conference
The French Institute of International Relations holds a World Policy Conference in Cannes (until December 10) to discuss global economic governance, the futures of the European Union, Middle East and Africa.

Nobel peace ceremony
José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, and Herman Van Rompuy, president of the European Council, visit Norway for the ceremony in Oslo where the Nobel peace prize is presented to the EU. British Prime Minister David Cameron is snubbing the ceremony after his suggestion that schoolchildren should represent member states was rebuffed by EU leaders.

Supporting human rights
World Human Rights Day honours the 63rd anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the UN declaration on human rights and is marked by political and cultural events. The organisation leads global human rights efforts, and speaks out in the face of violations.

Football feast in Japan
The Fifa Club World Cup, to decide the world’s best football club sides, takes place at the Toyota Stadium and International Stadium Yokohama, Japan (until December 16). Chelsea, European champions last season, play either Mexican side Monterrey or the winners of the Asian Champions League in the semi-finals.

Kuwait finance forum
The fourth Kuwait Financial Forum takes place. The two-day forum, at the Sheraton Hotel, will include speeches by the governor of the Central Bank of Kuwait Sheikh Salem Abdulaziz al-Sabah, and the secretary-general of the six-member Gulf Co-operation Council Abdullatif al-Zayani.

Industrial security
The Higher Commission for Industrial Security of Saudi Arabia holds a conference and exhibition on industrial security in Riyadh, to tackle protection, fire and safety issues.

Bankers in Bahrain
The 19th annual World Islamic Banking conference, in Bahrain, brings together more than 1,200 of the world’s Islamic finance leaders.

Dickensian doors open
The Charles Dickens Museum, the author’s only surviving London home, at 48 Doughty Street, reopens after being transformed and expanded in a £3.1m restoration. It will feature newly opened attics and kitchens, with an education centre at 49 Doughty Street.

Securities conference
The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association holds its annual conference at the Hilton, New York, (to December 12) where the main speaker is Arthur Levitt, former chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Wednesday
December 12
Breakaway regions talks
A further round of international talks on the future of the Georgian breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia takes place in Geneva. Conflict erupted in August 2008, with Georgian troops fighting Russian and separatist South Ossetian forces.

Corporate Europe plans
The European Commission presents an action plan on European company law and corporate governance, outlining the initiatives the commission intends to take in order to modernise European rules.

Ring returns to the screen
The Royal Film Performance is due at the Odeon Leicester Square and Empire Leicester Square in London. Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been selected for the charity premiere. It follows the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, who obtains the ring that was central to The Lord of the Rings saga.

Art deco auction
Auction house Christie’s holds a sale (until December 13) of the Steven A Greenberg Collection, “Masterpieces of French Art Deco” in New York. The focuses on artists associated with the Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925. With about 210 lots, the sale is expected to realise more than $15m.

Beijing games masters
The SportAccord World Mind Games take place at the Beijing International Convention Centre (until December 19). One hundred and fifty leading players will contest Bridge, chess, draughts, Go and Xiang Qi (Chinese chess).

Middle East insights
A lecture on “Visualising Political Struggle in the Middle East” is at the London School of Economics. Marking the publication of Lina Khatib’s latest book Image Politics in the Middle East: The Role of the Visual in Political Struggle, the lecture focuses on the evolution of political expression and activism in the Middle East.

Grid stars line up
Race of Champions motor racing, with some of the world’s best racing and rally drivers, takes place on a special tarmac circuit with two parallel lanes at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand (until December 16).

Nuclear safety agenda
The Fukushima Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Safety takes place (until December 17) in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Organised by the IAEA, the conference will contribute to strengthening nuclear safety worldwide.

Sunday
December 16
ANC leaders meet
The African National Congress holds its electoral conference in Mangaung. President Jacob Zuma is up for re-election for a second term.
